Color Schlieren imaging of high-pressure overexpanded planar nozzle flow using a simple, low-cost test apparatus

چکیده
Complex flow features within rocket nozzles can exert significant influence on both the dynamics and safety of rockets during flight. Specifically, under over-expanded flow conditions, during, low altitude flight, random, often large side loads can appear within nozzles. While significant research has focused on this classical problem, due to the high nozzle pressure ratios (NPR) extant across rocket nozzles, most experimental work: (1) has focused on measuring wall pressure distributions under conditions when side loads appear, (2) has been carried out in large government or industrial test facilities, and (3) has only provided limited, though crucially important, visualization data. This short paper describes the construction and operation of a very simple, low cost test apparatus that allows imaging of flow features within planar nozzles, under the high NPR conditions characteristic of medium-to-large rockets. A representative color Schlieren image of flow shock structure obtained within the test apparatus is also presented and briefly described.

Experimental Investigation of Supersonic Mixing Mechanisms of HYLTE Nozzle for DF Chemical Laser
Utilizing experimental techniques of Nano-particle based Planar Laser Scattering (NPLS) and schlieren photography, the flow patterns and mixing characteristics of a designed HYLTE (HYpersonic Low TEmperature) nozzle were investigated in this paper. In order to visualize the non-reacting flowfield of supersonic angled jets into a supersonic crossflow in the HYLTE nozzle, a testing section with w...
متن کاملAnalysis of a Low-Angle Annular Expander Nozzle
An experimental and numerical analysis of a low-angle annular expander nozzle is presented to observe the variance in shock structure within the flow field. A RANS-based axisymmetric numerical model was used to evaluate flow characteristics and the model validated using experimental pressure readings and schlieren images. Results were compared with an equivalent convergingdiverging nozzle to de...
متن کاملComputational simulation of an altitude adaptive nozzle concept
A computational analysis of an annular converging-diverging (CD) and an altitude adaptive expansion-deflection (ED) nozzle is presented. Numerical results were generated using a 2D axisymmetric, pressure-coupled solver in conjunction with the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence closure model and second order spatial discretisation schemes. Results were recorded over a theoretical altitude range and com...
متن کاملA Low Cost Numerical Simulation of a Supersonic Wind-tunnel Design
In the present paper, a supersonic wind-tunnel is designed to maintain a flow with Mach number of 3 in a 30cm×30cm test section. An in-house CFD code is developed using the Roe scheme to simulate flow-field and detect location of normal shock in the supersonic wind-tunnel. In the Roe scheme, flow conditions at inner and outer sides of cell faces are determined using an upwind biased algorithm. ...
متن کاملUnsteady Phenomena in Supersonic Nozzle Flow Separation
This work considers the instability of the jet plume from an overexpanded, shockcontaining convergent-divergent nozzle and attempts to correlate this instability to internal shock-induced separation phenomena. Time resolved wall pressure measurements and Pitot measurements are used as primary diagnostics. For the conditions of this study flow separation is asymmetric resulting in a large separa...
